Terrapin is one of Colorado’s Original Vertically Integrated Cannabis Companies

Terrapin has grown organically from a single suite in Boulder, Colorado, into a major multistate operator at the forefront of the cannabis industry’s nationwide evolution that plans to continue to serve as a leader in the cannabis space throughout the expansion. Beyond Terrapins start in Colorado, they operate a medical and recreational grow in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a medical grow and processing facility in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. Terrapin currently employs about 300 people and plans to expand into Missouri and New Jersey in the near future.

Founded in 2009 and still family-owned and operated by Chris Woods, Terrapin is one of Colorado’s original vertically integrated cannabis companies. Terrapin has done it their way, choosing not to follow the risky route of becoming a publicly-traded company. Committed to their mission, products, and customer service, maintaining the directional control of the operation is the key to their success vs. other companies in the industry.

Terrapin is committed to developing great products for their customers

First licensed as a medical marijuana company in 2010, Terrapin holds the first recreational retail licenses awarded in Boulder and Aurora, Colorado. Terrapin’s Colorado operation now features six retail licenses, four cultivation facilities, and one extraction lab. Committed to their customers, Terrapin continues to be the leader in the Colorado cannabis industry.

Terrapin’s Future Continues to Grow

In 2017, Terrapin was granted one of the first 12 Grower and Processor licenses in Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program in an extraordinarily competitive application process. In August 2018, Terrapin became the first commercial supplier of marijuana flower in Pennsylvania, resulting in a strong brand presence. Terrapin can currently be found in more than 90% of dispensaries throughout Pennsylvania. With their commitment and mission in mind, Terrapin is in the process of a $6 million expansion at its facility in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, which will bring another 30 jobs to the region.

In 2019, Terrapin increased its national footprint by expanding into Michigan. The first approved cultivation and processing facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Terrapin opened in June 2020 in the throes of a global pandemic that forced a virtual ribbon-cutting, which saw nearly 100 people join, including state and local elected leaders who welcomed the company to their community. With a focus on social equity, Terrapin was proud to work with a nonprofit organization, The Color of Cannabis, to host a social equity job fair focused on hiring Black Grand Rapids residents. The job fair allowed Terrapin to open in Michigan with nearly 25% diversity in hiring, a number that will be built upon as the company continues to grow in the state. Within weeks of opening in Michigan, Terrapin was distributing to more than 50 dispensaries across the state, and, within months, it was approved for adult-use (recreational) distribution.

Terrapin’s Expansion into Michigan is a huge success

Industry innovators in genetics, cultivation productivity, supercritical extraction, and operational efficiency, Terrapin’s position on the cutting edge leads to highly competitive production costs that allow the company to provide high-quality but affordable products. Terrapin also leads the way in compliance and effective legislative advocacy. In the formative years of Colorado’s medical and recreational cannabis program, Terrapin helped craft the state’s rules and regulations, establishing a template that has been deployed by many states across the nation. The company employs a full-service in-house government affairs team and is active in legislative policy discussions at all levels of government. Terrapin has been recognized for its industry contributions by the Colorado General Assembly, as well as by chambers of commerce, community nonprofits, and advocacy groups.

Terrapin is committed to Corporate Social Responsibility

Terrapin is deeply committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Terrapin leads by example in minimizing the environmental footprint of its operations. Plus, their commitment to its business community engagement is demonstrated in active membership on seven local chambers of commerce in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Terrapin has donated more than $600,000 to date, too, among others, organizations supporting culture, public health, veterans, and at-risk women and children in the communities it serves.

Whether it’s righting the wrongs of systemic racism as it pertains to drug and criminal justice reform or eradicating homelessness and benefiting veterans and the arts, Terrapin believes it is the best in the business by focusing on a holistic community approach to business. Terrapin appreciates its local community and loves being involved.

Terrapin has watched its nonprofit partnerships grow, including helping women transition out of prison, providing training to talented student dancers, providing shelter and food for the homeless, and advancing the rights of communities left behind by systemic racism and prejudice. Most recently, Terrapin became founding members of The Color of Cannabis and the Cannabis Impact Fund, two nonprofits with the mission of ending systemic racism and providing opportunities to Black Americans seeking access to the cannabis industry. Terrapin has also been engaged with supporting the community through the pandemic. Most recently, the company contributed $30,000 to the Colorado Music Experience, an organization dedicated to preserving the history of music in Colorado. Of that donation, $25,000 will go directly toward relief efforts for the beloved Boulder and Fox theaters, which have been forced to shutter due to COVID-19. Terrapin also contributed $20,000 to the Colorado COVID Relief Fund, which is providing grants and assistance to those struggling through the crisis.

Terrapin believes in planting local roots, which is embedded in the DNA of the company. More information can be found at: http://www.terrapincarestation.com/terrapin-for-the-people/ or https://terrapin.co/
