The Southern Hospitality That Caters to Human, Wildlife, and Country

by Eric Nelson

Benjy Griffith is a name held in high esteem when it comes to the realm of American landowners. He was the epitome of the southern gentleman — and his descendants have proven that they, too, have the manners and loyalty that come along with skill, invention, ingenuity and a business sense that’s brought them unbridled success.

A ‘Griffith’ name is frequently mentioned beside Southern Pine Plantations, which the original Benjy’s descendant, Benjamin W. Griffith III, founded in 1984.

All of Griffith’s holdings — from Georgia to South Carolina; Florida to Virginia; Tennessee to Texas and Montana — have one common goal; each one works to maximize clean air, water and wildlife habitats located on every property. The Griffith name is literally a huge ‘gold star’ when it comes to helping this country save wildlife habitats, valuable resources, and help America find ways to unhook the tether they have to oil, gas and other non-renewable energy sources.

Headlines are many where Benjamin Griffith III is concerned. Donating $2.5 million to endow a scholarship at Georgia’s Mercer University, is but one.

It was in January 2011, that Griffith acquired the Senah Plantation (8,400 acres of captivating beauty ), and went about achieving his 633492011146485788goal to turn it into one of the finest wild bird plantations and hunting spots in all of southern Georgia.

When it comes to the inner-workings of the company, Southern Pine Plantations interests have always been deeply embedded in timberland since it’s very beginning. Whether making transactions that equal 50,000 or even half-a-million acres, SPP keeps its mind on the original goal. No matter what the size of the property, they see timberland as a growing asset — a much-needed asset — which means the land remains the same.

Environmental benefits are not all the SPP properties provide, however; Griffith has opened doors to a myriad of recreational opportunities, allowing hunters to utilize the stunning land he owns and manages.

With each generation of the Griffith Family, new advocates join the company and bring their own creative ideas to the table. Each new injection of family members help make the business profitable, while at the same time keeping their absolute dedication to conservation and environmentalism firmly in place.

With every year comes new opportunities regarding the use of natural resources. Biofuels, carbon sequestration, global climate change, new harvesting techniques, wetland mitigation, wind energy and solar energy — these are only a few challenging topics on a long list that’s part of SPP’s constantly changing future.

The Senah Plantation — a jewel in any family’s crown — is beyond amazing; this is a hunter’s dream. We are speaking about 13,000 of imagesthe most beautiful, amazing acres that southwest Georgia has to offer. The plantation literally mesmerizes sportsmen and hunters. The finest quail hunting, duck hunting and deer hunting imaginable awaits all visitors who head there. Leased to private hunting parties only, Senah is what ‘catering’ is all about.

But when the entire Griffith family ‘package’ is brought together, this is one clan that can claim they cater to all. They cater to the environment, the country, the wildlife that’s struggling in other parts of this nation, as well as their habitats, and a whole lot more.

This type of southern hospitality could literally change the world in which we live, and make it a paradise once again.
