The American West in Bronze, 1850–1925, Opening May 11 at Denver Art Museum

May 11, 2014 – August 31, 2014Hub space third floor Hamilton Bldg.

Hamilton Building – Level 1 — Included in general admission.

The American West in Bronze1850–1925, showcases sculptures by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, Paul Manship, and more than 20 other artists.

The first full-scale exhibition of western bronzes, it includes pieces depicting American Indians, cowboys, cavalry, pioneers, horses, buffaloes, and other symbols of the West during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The American West in Bronzeoffers a fresh and compelling look at the complex role that artists played in creating three-dimensional interpretations of the Old West—whether based on fact, fiction, or something in-between.

The American West in Bronze is co-curated by Thomas Smith, director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the DAM, and Thayer Tolles, Marica F. Vilcek Curator, American paintings and sculpture, the American wing, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This exhibition will be seen in New York, Denver, and the Nanjing Museum in China. An exhibition catalog will be available in The Shop at the Denver Art Museum.

The American West in Bronze, 1850-1925, is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in collaboration with the Denver Art Museum. It is funded by Henry Luce Foundation and Terra Foundation for American Art. Local support is provided by Helen K. & Arthur E. Johnson Foundation, The Americana Foundation, Christie’s, the Sylvan Stool Family, Geraldine R.
