Spring Turkey Season: The Ultimate Cat & Mouse Hunt

Spring Turkey Season: The Ultimate Cat & Mouse Hunt

by Troutski

Spring turkey hunting is one sport that brings it all to the table for the hunter. Extremely challenging, very exciting and, most agree, addictive. When the gobbler sounds or struts into view, avid turkey hunters on both public and private lands often grow Hevi_Metal_Turky12g_3_LF 3fearful of failure.

After all, the senses of a wild turkey are more keen than anyone can imagine. Both its eyesight and hearing are among the best of any creature roaming the woods. When it senses the least bit of danger, the turkey can disappear as fast as it appeared. In other words, the spring turkey season is a game of cat-and-mouse that offers a true challenge to any hunter.

In recent years the number of turkey hunters has grown as new hunters enter the sport. Yep, it’s not getting any easier with more guys and gals in the turkey woods, whether public or private. So, with the hunt about to begin, brush up on the tips necessary to win the ultimate challenge of “Man vs. Gobbler.”

The first step into the turkey woods is always to take a lot of steps … as in scouting on foot. Locating areas of turkey habitat and narrowing those areas down to a specific piece of property and hunting sites must be done with care. Hopefully, some of those are located in your own backyard!

Field scouting is all about getting that detailed map of the area and, no matter how well you think you know the area, driving the back roads to listen for the gobbler’s call. A turkey call or a locator call can be used to get the  response you’re looking for. When you hear it, mark the location.

After driving is done and the map is made, head out again on foot and scout for turkey scratch — areas where birds have been images (1)feeding — and  don’t overlook loose feathers in preening areas. Look for tracks on creek banks, mud holes and burned understory. And listen well. Perhaps, some clucks and yelps will lead you to the area where they roost. But don’t get too close! Turkeys change their habits whenever danger nears them.

Learning the terrain is a must, because you can then use the terrain to your advantage. Setting up your hunt on any slope slightly higher than the turkey’s location always helps. hiding behind hills, hummocks, thickets and deadfalls, combined with good camouflage clothing, hides your movements and presence.

Preparation also includes turkey calls, decoys, choke tubes … you name it. The equipment necessary to make this thrilling hunt a successful one is long and varied. But without having the best ammo with you on the hunt, all your hard work will be for nothing.

The right game plan includes HEVI-Shot ammo.
