Place Your Bets

~Amy Lignor

It’s always amazing when it comes to odds-makers taking bets this soon as to who will win the next Super Bowl. Some odds are ridiculously horrific, while others seem absolutely natural. However, when you think back, the 49ers were scheduled to win this past Super Bowl according to the ‘experts’, and they ended up not even making it to the big game.

Superbowl_XXXIX,_2005Many are already convinced that the Seahawks will repeat no matter what. Youth, talent, and the earned skill and background of already getting there and winning are points in their favor. But…again, when you look back in the very near past the same was said about the Ravens, who went from winners to contenders to a team that seemed to be either in the middle of rebuilding, or a team that had just begun their journey in the big, scary world of the NFL. In other words, Seattle and their fans should not count any chickens (or Skittles), if you know what I mean. It was the first Lombardi trophy brought to Washington, and has a chance to be the last.

With some odds-makers out there, Seattle is not the one chosen to win it all once again. With some, they are looked at as taking the Number Two spot in the NFC; while others are hemming and hawing whether it will be the 49ers or the Seahawks – already seeing the NFC Championship Game rivals written in stone. Still others have Denver coming back and kicking butt to win Super Bowl XLIX, because they simply are angry about the whole debacle that just happened. Of course, with the Cowboys completely screwing up and DeMarcus Ware now becoming a Bronco, they have gotten an even loftier edge over everyone else.

The 2015 Super Bowl betting odds, when taken as a big picture with everyone weighing in on ALL 32 NFL teams, do have the Seahawks repeating. Again, the repeat can be a defeat pretty quickly, as we have all seen in the past. After the uncharacteristic and, most likely, one time blowout, the Broncos are sitting on the sheets with 8/1 odds. The San Francisco 49ers are still seen, because of their youth, charisma, beloved coach, and the belief they have in Kap and the rest of their well-oiled team – as being number two at the outside. But seeing as that second-best hurts Kap as much as it did Montana and Young, I would have to say they have more fire and anger against their real rivals – the Seahawks – this year than they have ever had before. It would not be a surprise to see them come out on the field and wipe the floor with everyone.

When we talk disappointments last season, we talk a great deal. After all, there were a whole lot of disappointing games and teams that did not even get close to the level they should have, considering their talent and skill. The beauty of the Falcon was so not beautiful this year (4-12), and the injuries they have had to deal with will still be annoying when the season begins. Matt Ryan is still in the QB position, hoping for the best, but he needs a team that both protects him and…catches the darn ball!

Another bird, the Cardinal, is not even getting a chance this year. The reason is not because they are a horrific team, it is simply because the Super Bowl will be played on their home turf, and it is a fact that no team has ever played the big game in their home stadium. Cutting them off at the knees has already been done by the experts and odds-makers on just this fact alone.

100/1 is the worst for a team and the absolute best for a better with tons of money they do not mind losing. Think about it. They could make headlines for turning their millions into billions if they bet on the Jacksonville Jaguars and the team actually took it all. Of course, saying the Jaguars will win the Super Bowl is much like saying the earth is flat.

As always we will wait for the games to begin and see if the experts and odds-makers begin to sweat. After all, if there was one thing 2014 taught us it was that even the most reliable teams can have seriously bad days.
