MOOSE-N-AROUND

by Sherry Gillam

We hadn’t spotted a moose all summer long in Montana…not even in Yellowstone Park, which is very odd.  Maybe we had been looking too hard.  It was early October in the late afternoon and we had pulled off the highway near a tiny town near Bozeman.  I had spotted an interesting thing to photograph, and actually convinced Troutski, to turn around so I could take advantage of the great light!  I never dreamed that this little outing would be so special.

Moosin' Around-old car with willow- Bozeman-Montana-Roadtrekin.comThere next to the lonely highway in the tall dry weeds, was a very old rusty automobile with something growing out of it.  Examining it closer, it was more like an early 1900’s leftover shell with a healthy young willow tree growing right out of the roof! It was mysterious for sure, as a seed must have found exactly the right conditions in order to grow in the backseat.  The scenario hopefully would inspire our artist friend to paint it on canvas and maybe he would title it “Life After Death”.

While waiting patiently, Troutski spotted something BIG and DARK, cross the highway about a half-mile away.   He wasn’t sure if it was a bear or what…?  We quickly   hopped into the van, cameras ready in search of the unidentified creature.  We finally spotted it in a field and though it was several yards away… the long gangly legs, heavy dark body and the large antlers, were a dead give away.  It definitely wasn’t a bear, but to finally see a Bull Moose was just as exciting for us.  His “rack” was huge, even at a distance. He was moving at a steady trot and as if nothing at all, he leapt over a barbwire fence and disappeared into the willows.

We thought we’d never see him again, but guessed the direction that he might go and if we were lucky, we might spot him Cattle Drive-Montana-Bozeman-Roadtrekin.com.again. We drove slowly down a nearby road looking intently and decided to park the van on the soft shoulder when we saw a herd of cattle coming towards us, lead by a couple of cowboys.  Seemed a bit ironic as the cattle were being moved from one field to another, while the moose just jumped the fence to get where he wanted to go.

Troutski and I hoped to get an opportunity to get a decent photo of the moose.  After the ruckus of cattle herd had moved on and the smell had dissipated, we noticed the moose coming our way at a steady pace.  Every now and then, he would stop and look around as if contemplating his next direction.  When he finally made his decision, he headed right towards us.  It was a spectacular moment of greatness!

Bull Moose-Bozeman-Montana-Moosin' Around-Roadtrekin.comThe Bull Moose kept getting closer and closer and then, about 50 feet in front of us…jumped the barbed wire fence…right in front of us! He wasted no time getting across the road leaping over the next fence and headed off into the sunset, literally.   It was a sight to behold.

 > Side Note: Moose are spontaneous and dangerous creatures… you never know what they will do or the mood their in, kind of like people.  You must be very careful, as with any wild animal and stay out of their way.  That was the last we saw him.

Points to Ponder…

#1.  STOP looking so hard, if it’s there …IT will find YOU.  Just know that it IS there.

#2.  Life After Death.  MAYBE when you are done with your body, it’s possible that something may grow from it.

#3.  LIFE is Full of CHOICES.  Follow your own path and jump a few fences if you need to.

#4.  ENJOY the special moments.

On the way home was a beautiful full moon, otherwise known as the “Hunter’s Moon”.  No wonder the moose was on the run.
