Live to Ride – Ride to Live

 by Amy Lignor

Getting on that motorcycle, whether it be with your band of brothers or your wife, is a fun thing to do. You are talking about getting out into ‘Nature’ and seeing all that the dear ‘Mother’ has to provide, without having to strap on hiking gear and stare up at a mountain saying: “I REALLY don’t want to do this.”

It’s a fact that this nation owns some of the most beautiful and famous stretches of roads, highways and bi-ways in the entire world. motorcycles-twisty-roadAnd the Fall, when the leaves are changing and the colors are popping, is the perfect time to sit back on the Harley (or other brands, of course), and take a relaxing trip utilizing your favorite mode of transportation.

One of the greatest areas you can think of when riding your way through America is inarguably the Texas Hill Country. Most begin in Austin and head west on Highway 290, and as the miles fly by the land gets more and more captivating. This is one of those rides that will be beyond memorable. And the only thing that will make you a tad upset as you witness the Guadalupe River Valley, is the constant need you will have to pull over and snap some unforgettable pictures with your cell phone.

As a New Englander, I can say that Vermont and New Hampshire are the areas for some of the most stunning scenery in the U.S. of A. – most especially when it comes to Autumn. In Vermont, most will rave about the Green Mountain National Forest locales. The rider will feel as if they’re free, and sometimes like the only person left on the planet when they head through the vast and silent beauty of the Green Mountains. This is not a straight trek, by any means. The deer are also in full force and have no problem jumping in the way of your relaxing journey.

Whether the article be on hiking, fishing or hunting – the same goes for you motorcycle connoisseurs. The Grand Canyon National Park area, beginning in Northern Arizona, will allow you the chance to go back in history and join with big names that once traveled the immortal Route 66. There are places that are still set in the 1950’s and 60’s and call out to each and every one of us to enjoy the ‘coolest’ area still in existence.

And for an even more interesting history lesson, check out the ghost town of Jerome in Arizona. This is a town with amazing history. Even though there are visitors, you will view the old buildings that still remain and may even see some ghost-like figures of the famous and infamous gunslingers who once stayed the night and started trouble.

If sunshine is what you want, then head straight to the Florida Panhandle and take a trip to the Keys. Yes, there are tourists in masses as large as the deer populations up north, but choose US 98E from Panama City and you’ll have less annoyance and more beauty. Following many trails will lead you to Key West – which, let’s face it, is basically saying you are headed to paradise.

Forget the sun – head to the darkness. The Alaska Highway is a choice that many diehard outdoorsmen and women choose when making their decision to find freedom on the open road. You have to be ready for some pretty rugged landscape, not to mention the intensity of various wildlife herds wandering all over the place.

But by traveling through a section of the Yukon Territory, you will run right into the Alaska Highway. And although you will witness the huge landscape that goes on for what seems like forever – you will always find a great place to eat, gas up, or spend the night staring up at the most brilliant stars in the sky.

Last, but definitely not least, don’t miss the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Be careful, because this is one of those amazing trips that involves a lot of ups and downs; hills, valleys, mountain passes – you name it, you’ll need to be ready for it. This is not only a scenic adventure for bikers, but a real test of skill.

But no matter what you choose, the Great Outdoors will be waiting to serve you. So rev it up and go!
