‘Honey’ Saved from Abuse and Abandonment in Arizona

The following story was published on Examiner.com by Denise Carey-Costa and is reposted here with the author’s permission.

We have all heard the age old adage “Dog is man’s best friend.” But is man really dog’s best friend? For centuries Honeydogs have been by man’s side protecting him, loving him unconditionally and sitting by his side even in death. But how has man repaid the dog’s loyalty? By abandoning them, experimenting on them, killing them for no reason other than no one wants them and subjecting them to all kinds of torture and abuse.

The world is still reeling from the atrocities committed against Puppy Doe in Boston last summer. Just when we think we cannot bear to hear of another atrocity committed against “man’s best friend” another ugly story surfaces. This one in Coolidge, Arizona.

Kelly Anderson, founder and president of K9 Buddies Rescue in Mesa, Arizona had a past adopter of one of her dogs contact her about horrible abuse he saw inflicted on a puppy. The dog’s owner maliciously picked up the dog by her leash and while she was hanging by her neck 2 feet off the ground he started kicking her. If that wasn’t enough he threw the helpless puppy out into the street and drove off. The shocked and horrified witness called Kelly and asked what he should. She advised him to bring the puppy to her. Kelly founded K9 Buddies Rescue about a year ago and has successfully rescued and re-homed 124 dogs and multiple cats. She cannot turn her back on any animal in need.

The witness was able to locate the abusers address as well as get his name. Kelly called the Coolidge Police Department and had a report made for animal abuse. Neighbors also filled out statements and even mentioned to the police that the suspect was also involved in dog fighting.

Kelly brought the dog to her home and her vet. She named the little puppy “Honey.” The poor pup was so traumatized by her ordeal that she would not allow anyone to touch her other than Kelly’s 5-year-old son. If someone else approached her or tried to touch her she would urinate on herself.

When the vet examined Honey he found older injuries on her 12 week old little body that were indicative of prior abuse. She sustained a broken rib and has four older fractures caused by previous abuse. She also has a lump on her Larynx possibly caused by the strangulation with the leash.

Kelly is continuing to keep Honey in her care and also contacting the Coolidge Police Department daily to make sure something will be done about the monster who inflicted such injuries on a helpless puppy. If he has done it once he will do it again and again.

Honey is recovering slowly but her vet bills are mounting. Her injuries are going to require a lot of follow up care. She also suffers from Colitis which could have been caused by the trauma of being kicked in her side and in her belly. On a good note though, Honey tested negative for Parvo, Distemper, Giarda, and Coccidia.

Honey needs your help. If you can donate to help her it would mean the world to one little dog who started life seeing the ugly side of humans. Let’s restore her faith in humanity. Please send donations to Honey’s vet care via Paypal to K9buddiesrescue@hotmail.com.
