Fighting Hunger is the WFP’s Mission and Our Miracle

by Carmen Schwartz

This Christmas it’s nice to give thanks and blessings to everyone out there who does their absolute best – not only at Christmas but throughout the year, to support others and attempt at all times to make this world a far better place to live.

This blessed week, it is a wonderful idea to give a ‘shout-out’ to one organization that is dedicated to a huge mission – trying to solve global hunger, and build a world where no one goes without.

World Food Program USA is that organization, and works tirelessly to see that everyone has the food they need in order to be healthy and live productive and full lives.

For those who are unaware, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the largest humanitarian agency, that reaches almost one billion people located in countries around the world. The branch of World Food Program USA is on board with this global initiative, working on fundraising, advocacy and education here at home.

This help is not only given in disastrous situations, although the WFP is always there when Mother Nature strikes and people are in desperate need of food assistance in order to live through tragedy. Everything from natural disasters to towns and cities that areimages experiencing a loss of crops or a devastation of livestock and can not produce the food that’s needed, are also helped.

Rapid deployment occurs when early warning systems show what countries are in danger and who needs assistance as fast as possible. In their role, WFP monitors food prices, weather patterns and all population difficulties, including overcrowding and illness. Working with donations in order to buy and store supplies around the globe so that everything is already in place when needed is one of the most precious gifts any organization can give.

Another extremely important mission for the WFP is helping children at school not go hungry because of  economic or global conditions. It is almost frightening to learn that approximately sixty-six million students go to school every single day hungry, but it’s true. And WFP rises to this challenge by preparing school meals so that every child can have a chance at a happy, well-lived life.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) provides school meals to over 24 million children in under-developed countries. This serves two purposes; not only do the children have a full stomach in order to learn better, but the families earn an extra incentive to send their children to school because thy know food will be provided that the child may not be able to get at home.

The facts remain: Nutrition and health during the first 1,000 days (which is approximately the time span of a mother’s pregnancy to a child’s second birthday) is the most crucial. Having the necessary food for the mother and child will actually determine how that child’s future will turn out; if they have the good health that will allow them to thrive.

Malnutrition causes death; with the latest figures being over three million of our global children dying each year.

All of this – all of this tragedy – is completely stoppable. Which is why the WFP should be given a huge thank you from the people of this nation as well as the rest of this world. Their hard work and dedication to save our children, our communities and give the next generation hope, is beyond commendable.

Happy Holidays!
